Thailand Fights for its Tourism

The Thai government is to launch a massive campaign in an attempt to lure the tourists back to its shores and boost the country’s economy. After the rioting and violent scenes in Bangkok were aired worldwide it wants to show travellers that Thailand is a safe and exciting place to be.

Thailand’s tourism industry continues feeling the effects of the 2 month long anti-government protests hotels all over the country as hotels and lodgings report less than 50% occupancy due to tourists cancelling their holidays. The hospitality industry now faces a higher level of competition from neighbouring countries as tourists look to other alternatives for their holidays.

In the past, Thailand has always recovered fairly quickly, and it’s to be hoped it won’t take too long this time either. Take the 2003 outbreak of SARS, the 2004 tsunami and a 2008 protest that shut Thailand’s main international airport for days. Thailand is a fighter and the tourism industry is optimistic that next high season will see things improve.

The country has a lot of strong competition from its neighbors. Singapore has 2 casinos, at Resorts World Sentosa and Marina Bay Sands. Malaysia is focusing on pushing its tourism industry and has started by allowing new international carriers to fly into its airports. Singapore and KL are both home of fast-growing, cut-rate carriers, making them perfect as a base into the surrounding areas.

The Thai government has plans to generate over 5 billion baht ($150 million)to help tourism-industry businesses in low-interest loans with two-year grace periods. There are also plans to waive visa fees for some countries and reduce landing fees for airlines.

To endorse a more encouraging picture of Thailand, there are arrangements for a street fair in Bangkok to be called “Together We Can”, with 700 booths and performers as a way to show the city streets are safe again. Last week, the city held an official blessing ceremony and assembled 1,000 monks to accept merit-making offerings.

Hello Representatives,

RE: Story of PC Air Lines & Transsexuals
http://www.nydailynews.com/news/world/2011/01/28/2011-01-28_pc_air_new_airline_in_thailand_claims_to_be_first_to_hire_transsexual_flight_att.html#ixzz1DWOwdyGY

For Your Information, below is a letter I’m sending out around the world.

I’m contacting you to inform you that many Transsexuals, worldwide, which I am one, are appalled and outraged, that PC Air Lines are requiring Transsexual employees to wear a special identification pin, defining their gender to the public and other employees (“….The transsexual employees will wear a special gold “Third Sex” name tag to help travelers and airline employees identify what gender they are, according to Nation.”)
Reminds me of the Identification Hitler required of different segments of the population. In addition, PC Air Lines have advertised hiring Transsexuals for the first time. It clearly illustrates, to the world, the discrimination that has been occurring for years.

It is my hope that The New York Daily News will run an opposing story, as a follow up the this one, expressing another perspective.

Colorado State, in which I live, is the leader in the United States for having the strongest Laws for Equal Rights and Protection of Transsexuals and Transgender Individuals. In addition, I’m also an Internationally acclaimed Entertainer featured in the News of ABC & CBS; plus, 35 countries. I will not perform any concerts, nor visit, no matter what the proposed contract, in Thailand, until the country begins treating all of it’s citizens as equals.

Thank you for your time and interest in running another story to express another perspective. There are many pages on Google about me. Feel free to have any New York Daily News Representatives contact me regarding this matter.

Sincerely,
Camilla Rose Waters
